The idea behind the Harlem Renaissance series first came into my head as a sixteen-year-old when I was listening to Ella Fitzgerald singing A-Train. I became infatuated with this movement and devoted the next year and a half of my life to researching and painting it. The result was a series of mural sized paintings. Four sub-panels (each measuring 5 by 5 1/2 feet) depict the areas of visual art, literature, music and theatre, while the main panel celebrates all aspects of black life in 1920s Harlem.
